What are dental veneers?
Dental veneers are thin pieces of porcelain or resin that can be applied on the surface of the teeth to make slight position alterations, or to change tooth shape, size, and/or color. It recreates natural looking teeth, while providing strength. It can enhance your look by providing evenly shaped and coloured teeth.
What are the different types of dental veneers?
Composite Veneers – Composite veneers are thin layer of tooth colored filling material that are placed on the surface of the teeth. When properly done, Composite Veneers can provide a life-like, beautiful finish that can last a long time.
Composite veneer is done chair side. Layers of the composite resin is applied to the tooth and carved directly in the mouth. The greatest advantage of composite veneer is that it can easily be adjusted until the desired esthetic outcome is achieved. Composite veneers stain like natural teeth, and it cannot cover severe discoloration. It can however be easily repaired, removed and replaced at a fraction of the cost of Porcelain Veneers.
Pre-Fabricated Veneers – Pre- fabricated veneers are pre- formed shells of composite or composite-porcelain hybrid that can be directly applied on the teeth in as little as one office visit with minimally invasive tooth preparation. Being pre-fabricated, it is only available in 3 sizes- small, medium and large. The colour and size can be adjusted directly on the patient once seated.
Porcelain Veneers – Porcelain Veneers are custom made and specifically designed for you. Porcelain Veneers are crafted in the Dental Laboratory. Porcelain Veneers provide the best coverage for heavy stains. It requires 2 appointments. During the first appointment, a small amount of surface tooth enamel is removed to allow the Porcelain veneer to lay flat within the smile line. An impression of the prepared teeth is taken which will be used by our dental lab to craft the veneers. Before you leave, temporary veneers are cemented on your teeth to protect your smile. The Porcelain veneers are installed on the second appointment.
What is the process of getting dental veneers?
Porcelain laminate veneers consist of a compilation of several thin ceramic layers which replace original tooth enamel, and an adhesive layer. A thin amount of the labial tooth enamel is removed to create room for the porcelain veneer to fit within the mouth and accurately restore tooth function while creating an even better appearance than the original tooth.
An impression of the prepared teeth is taken and sent to the dental Laboratory where custom made veneers are carefully crafted. Temporary veneers made of resin is placed on the patient’s teeth while the final ones are being fabricated.
Once the veneers arrive from the lab, they are tried on the patient to check the fit, color and look . If the patient approves, the Porcelain veneers are cemented using a dual cure cement that creates a bond between the teeth and the undersurface of the veneer. The final result would be a naturally beautiful looking smile that is sure to make anyone look younger and more confident.
What are the advantages of having dental veneers?
- Since veneers are individually sculpted for each patient, it is nearly impossible to tell the difference between a veneer and a natural tooth. Unlike natural teeth, custom-made veneers resist coffee and tea stains, and cigarette smoke because they are made of high-tech materials.
- With veneers—as opposed to crowns—your natural teeth remain largely intact with only a minimal amount being altered to fit the veneer.
- For teeth that resist whitening, veneers can make even the darkest teeth appear bright white.
- Dentists may also recommend veneers to quickly fix minor twists, overlaps, and small gaps.
For Patients who want permanently white teeth without the need to repeatedly bleach and worry about teeth stains, Porcelain veneers is the quickest and easiest solution.
What are the disadvantages of having dental veneers?
- Once veneer is placed on the teeth, the process is irreversible because the surface of the teeth will be reduced to accommodate the veneer. Although adjustments and even new veneers can be made, you cannot return to the original condition of the tooth.
- Porcelain veneers are fabricated in the laboratory. Hence, it would take at least 7-10 days before it can be installed. For Composite and Pre-fabricated veneers, it can be finished in one appointment
- Some patients may experience sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures after veneer installation. This is perfectly normal as a thin layer of enamel was removed during the process. This typically disappears within a few days.
In a healthy mouth properly treated with porcelain veneers—and where destructive forces are minimized or eliminated—a patient should be able to use porcelain veneers like his or her own teeth. Although they’re very strong, veneers are also brittle. You should avoid the same excessive stresses you would avoid with non-veneered teeth: don’t bite your fingernails, chew ice, or open beer bottles with your veneers!
How to maintain your dental veneers
Maintaining porcelain veneers is actually quite simple: Treat them as you would your original teeth, with routine brushing and flossing. Using non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste is best.
A post-operative follow up is scheduled so the dentist can check and evaluate how your mouth is reacting to the veneers. Adjustment may also be made to correct minor bite problems. If you have a habit of grinding or clenching your teeth, your dentist may ask you to wear a night guard so you do not damage your veneers.
Regular dental visit twice a year is recommended so the dentist can do scaling and polishing and check for any sign of potential failure.
How long does the process take?
Placement of Dental Veneers can take as little as one appointment for composite veneers, to 7 to 10 working days for laboratory fabricated Porcelain veneers. You can have a new smile in a week!
